Jane Eyre

Pride and Prejudice
by: Jane Austen
This is a real classic as well and dates from about the same time as Jane Eyre. Whereas Jane is a poor girl who tries to climb the social ladder, this is the story of four middle class girls whose most important job it is to find a rich husband. Elizabeth is the heroine of the story and we see everything through her eyes.
Some call this a chick lit novel, but it is more. Elizabeth is not only concerned with her own love life but is a clever and critical girl who casts her critical eye on everything and everyone and subjects every one to her sharp tongue.

Animal Fram
by: George Orwell
George Orwell called this a modern fairy story.
It is about a farm where the animals, led by the pigs, chase away the farmer and take over control of the farm. This seems a unique opportunity for the animals to create a better life for themselves. Will they be able to do it?
Orwell also wanted to give a warning. The book is very interesting to read taking the politcal and historical background of the times into account. If you decide to leave that out and read it just as a fairy tale it is a very amusing story as well.
