The arrival of the Germanic tribes.
The island of Great Britain has been under attack and conquered time and time again throughout history. We call the original people of the islands Celts. Part of the island was conquered by the Romans in 54BC. This rule lasted nearly 500 years, until 410 AD. By that time the people of Britain ruled by the Romans had adapted to the Roman way of life and were largely Roman themselves. When the Roman empire collapsed the Roman troops in Britain were called home to Rome and Britain was left to defend herself. No sooner had the Roman troops left, and the original people, the Celts started attacking again. The Romanized Britains didn't like this one bit but they were no match for these fierce warrior tribes. They decided to call in the help of the Angles and the Saxons who lived across the channel and were part of the Germanic tribes. The Angles and the Saxons did help the British people but they liked it so much in Britain that they decided to stay. From helpers they turned into the next attackers. Again, the British people were conquered and over time they adapted to the new rule and the new people; they became Anglo-Saxon. It is from this era that we have written records and literature that tell us something about their way of life, their culture and literature.
